MINISTRY FOCUSES ON THE IMPROVEMENT OF READING SKILLS

The Ministry of National Education prepares reading materials and question banks for the assessment and improvement of reading skills of students.

Both students and teachers welcomed the text books and question banks prepared for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students.
 
Minister of National Education Mahmut Özer stated that, "We have started a new campaign for the assessment and improvement of reading skills of 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. It is important to improve effective reading skills when we consider the fact that this skill has a direct impact on listening, speaking and writing skills. Moreover, reading skill is important in academic, cognitive and emotional improvement."
 
Different text types and grading guidelines  
Özer said that class and Turkish teachers carried out detailed study in an effort to prepare different types of reading materials and sample questions for different grades.
 
Reading materials include stories, fairy tales, scientific and biographic texts enriched with illustrations and photos.
 
"The entire World is focusing on raising children who have higher thinking and reasoning skills and are capable of using their knowledge and skills to adapt to changing conditions. Our reading materials and question banks will assist our students to improve these skills. Question banks include multi choice and open ended questions," stated Özer.
 
Printed materials prepared for the development reading skills will be distributed to 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students at the beginning of next school year
Minister of National Education Özer noted that printed and free reading materials and sample questions will be distributed to students at the beginning of next school year.
 
Context of the campaign will be expanded
Noting that the Ministry gives great importance to feedback, Minister Özer said, "Both students and teachers appreciated reading materials and sample questions and this makes us very happy. We are planning to expand the context of the campaign based on the feedback."
