TWO NEW GUIDEBOOKS FOR FAMILIES ON PROPER USE OF TECHNOLOGY

In this period when digitalization became active in every aspect of life, as part of "Family Education Series" the Ministry of National Education prepared two new guides to answer frequently asked questions. Guidebooks on "Safe Internet Use" and "Cyber Bullying" published by the Directorate General of Special Education and Guidance Services light the way for family participation in the digital world. Minister of National Education Ziya Selçuk stated that with these guidebooks they provided short and viable suggestions on what parents should do, how they behave and what measures to take in this process. He added that they have support suggestions with videos that can be reached through QR codes.

Directorate General of Special Education and Guidance Services of the Ministry of National Education has prepared two guidebooks titled 'Safe Internet Use' and 'Cyber Bullying' to support parents who want to guide their children in this period when the correct use of technology has become even more important.

The guidebook named 'Safe Internet Use states; "Just as we teach our children to look at both sides while crossing the street, swim and bike, in order to surf in the digital world they need to learn how to use the communication tools and the Internet safely and properly." The guidebook explains that it is not an effective method to ban children from accessing the Internet for their development and adaptation. Instead, children should be guided to use technology effectively, efficiently and properly.

The guidebook, suggests parents to be informed, relevant, conscious, create common use areas, take security measures and become children's screen.

The guidebook on "Cyber Bullying" contains the right methods that can be followed by families in case of cyberbullying. Stating that there is no distinctive symptom of cyberbullying, the guidebook recommends families to watch behavior changes in their children closely. The guidebook also underlines that the best security strategy is to talk to children.

Both guidebooks answer the questions like "My child is glued to his/her cellphone. How can I limit the use it?", "How does excessive internet use affect my child's development?" by offering suggestions with short videos that can be reached through QR Codes.

"We have provided viable suggestions to parents with guidebooks"
Stating that they put emphasis on the protection of the resilience of the students and their parents in addition to provide students with academic support during the global pandemic, Minister of National Education Ziya Selçuk said, "During this period of physical distance, thanks to technology we continued to communicate with students, teachers and parents effectively. In almost all meetings we had questions from families on 'correct use of technology'. In order to answer all questions and to support parents to guide children, our experts made an important preparation and collected all suggestions and information in two guidebooks. We have provided short and viable suggestions on what parents should do, how they behave and what measures to take. We also have supported suggestions with videos that can be reached through QR codes. Parents can scan the QR codes to find the answers given by experts to their questions. As always we will continue to develop parent teacher collaboration and be with parents and children by all means.
